All About Baby Onesies

With gift giving in mind, one of the best items you can give at a baby shower is an onesie. If you are not too sure what a baby onesie is, it is essentially a one piece outfit that snaps into place at the crotch. The design of the baby onesie is such that an infant can be dressed and undressed quickly. This is an important factor when the baby is cold or requires changing.

The onesie has since become a standard piece of clothing for the average baby. In this article we will take a much closer look at some of the most interesting and unusual facts about this popular infant and child clothing garment.

1 – The Baby Onesie Is Not All That Old

Baby clothing was not anything like it is today. Usually infants and babies worn clothes that were similar to what adults wore, but in much smaller sizes. In the 18th Century, fashions changed and that was when male and female infants started wearing white dresses with close fitting bodices.

The onesie came out in the 1950s. Invented by the founder of a children’s wear company, Walter Artzt, the new clothing item swept the world and changed how babies were dressed forever.

2 – Early Baby Onesies Had Simple Designs

The inspiration for the onesie was a garment that adults wore. It was the jumpsuit. Trends following the creation of the onesie saw them appear in single colors with nothing fancy on them whatsoever. In fact, soon after the onesie became popular, the ‘chosen’ color for boys became pink and blue was selected for girls. It wasn’t until the 20th Century when trends shifted to where boys wore blue and girls wore pink.

3 – Eventually The Color Palette Changed For Baby Onesies

It wasn’t until the 1960s and into the 1970s when the color choices for onesies was getting a bit on the dull and boring side. Parents could only buy so many pink or blue ones and after a while dressing children was uninspiring. Then new colors started to hit the market giving parents a fresh choice which included yellow and green which became unisex options that ended up expanding infant wardrobes.

4 – The Hippy Movement Also Influenced Onesies

The vibrant colors that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s not only introduced additional color choices for baby onesies, it had a greater impact than that. Designers followed the ‘hippy trend’ and started to create onesies that also featured interesting patterns on them. It was also at this time when artwork, funny sayings and identifying word marks started to add personalization to the once plain looking onesie.
